It is administered by AAMC (stands for American Association of Medical Colleges) and serves as a de-facto standard for admission in countries like the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, etc.

Eligibility Criteria for MCAT Exam 2023:
An applicant is eligible for applying for the MCAT exam if he/she needs to attend a health professional institute/school, which includes Allopathic, Osteopathic, Podiatric, and Veterinary Medicine. If you have finished (or pursuing) an MBBS degree course, you can appear in this exam.
However, if the above circumstances don’t apply, then the applicant needs to ask for “special permission” from AAMC before applying for the exam. You need to drop an e-mail to mcat@aamc.org, explaining the reason you want to appear in the exam. It usually takes a week to get a response; hence it is advisable to be careful with the deadlines. You also need a valid passport as an id-proof.

MCAT is held 25 times a year. You can visit the official site to check the different dates on which the exam of MCAT is held in different countries. A candidate should plan to appear in the MCAT a year prior to the desired institute’s starting year. The score of this exam is usually valid for 2-3 years, and the test can be taken up to a maximum of 3 times in a year and 7 times in a lifetime.

Exam centers in India:
Indian students are in for a shock regarding the details of the exam center in India, as the MCAT does not have exam centers in India. The applicants are required to travel abroad in order to appear in the exam. Countries in which the exam takes place are Thailand, Malaysia or Singapore, etc.
The test is held in 19 international locations, and the registration procedure is the same for US and international candidates. However, one needs to pay a 90$ additional fee if he/she is registering for a non-US test location.

Exam fees:
MCAT costs $310 if you register during the normal window (about a month or more prior to the test date), but the fees increase if one registers late. There are additional fees for location or date changes, and an international fee is also applicable for non-US test locations.
Hence, an Indian candidate in the best-case scenario needs to shell out USD 400 for taking the MCAT. In Indian Rupees, the MCAT fee is INR 25,750 (approx) at the current exchange rate.
How to apply for MCAT Exam 2023:
- Go to the official site which is aamc.org
- Then click on the option MCAT option under the Pre-Medical Students category
- Then sign in to your account by entering your Username and Password
- If you are a New User then Sign up by clicking on the option Create New Account
- To sign up, you will have to enter your Email Id, Name, Sex (Male or Female)
- Then you will be given a Username and Password
- Now after logging in to the same account
- Fill in all the details of the MCAT and register there
Exam Pattern:
Questions in subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Psychology, and Sociology appear in the exam of MCAT. The exam consists of 4 sections:
- Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
- Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
- Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills
- Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behaviour
The range of scores for every section of the MCAT is 118-132, hence the total scores range from 472-528 with a mean/median of 500.
A periodic table is available for use, while a calculator is not allowed.
